Amazon.com Review Amazon Best of the Month, September 2008: The eccentric and engaging food-lit manifesto, Eat Me: The Food and Philosophy of Kenny Shopsin, collects the wisdom, rants, and recipes of New York's most legendarily cranky, publicity-hating short-order cook. The foul-mouthed genius of Kenny Shopsin has been captured before, most notably in Calvin Trillin's wonderful New Yorker profile and the documentary I Like Killing Flies, but Eat Me gives a from-the-cook's-mouth take on life behind the counter, with the layout of a quirky, illustrated textbook. Chapter titles like "Selling Water, or the Secret of the Restaurant Business" and "The Story of Shopsin's Turkey, or Why I Hate the Health Department" should give you a taste of what's in store. Formerly located in Greenwich Village, Shopin's now sets up camp at Stall No. 16 at the Essex Street Market, where you'll find dozens of soups, sandwiches, burgers, milk shakes, breakfast plates, and pancakes (from Plain to White Mint Chocolate Chip), along with original comfort-food classics like Blisters on My Sisters (tortillas, cheese, fried eggs, beans, and rice), gracing the crammed 900-item menu. Getting tossed out of Shopsin's (for whatever offense) has taken on badge-of-honor status among diners--the culinary equivalent of being on the business end of a Don Rickles zinger. Reading Eat Me feels like the next best thing. --Brad Thomas Parsons
Product Description "Pancakes are a luxury, like smoking marijuana or having sex. Thatâs why I came up with the names Ho Cakes and Slutty Cakes. These are extra decadent, but in a way, every pancake is a Ho Cake.â Thus speaks Kenny Shopsin, legendary (and legendarily eccentric, ill-tempered, and lovable) chef and owner of the Greenwich Village restaurant (and institution), Shopsinâs, which has been in existence since 1971.
Kenny has finally put together his 900-plus-item menu and his unique philosophyâimagine Elizabeth David crossed with Richard Pryorâto create Eat Me, the most profound and profane cookbook youâll ever read. His rantsâon everything from how the customer is not always right to the art of griddling; from how to run a small, ethical, and humane business to how we all should learn to cook in a Goodnight Moon world where everything you need is already in your own home and headâwill leave you stunned or laughing or hungry. Or all of the above.
With more than 120 recipes including such perfect comfort foods as High School Hot Turkey Sandwiches, Cuban Bean Polenta Melt, and Cornmeal-Fried Green Tomatoes with Comeback Sauce, plus the best soups, egg dishes, and hamburgers youâve ever eaten, Eat Me is White Trash Cooking for the twenty-first century, as unforgettable and mind-boggling as its author.

Fascinating and Fun May 2, 2010 Robert Scott I ordered this book after watching "I Like Killing Flies." Although not quite as edgy as the film, the book is shot through with Shopsin's philosophy, which is so down to earth it makes me think maybe 15 years of psychoanalysis worked for him in some mysterious way! I love the fact that he is in business truly for the community he seeks, and that he does not suck up to potential customers just for their money. His recipes are easy and practical, not to mention ingenious, for instance, his original way of making soups. Those I have tried are marvelous, and at last I know how to make great guacamole. Although his creations are not for those on a diet, I highly recommend the book just for its originality. See the film first and you will want more...
Almost as good as being there March 8, 2010 Woodsie the Owl (Catskills, New York) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you were lucky enough to eat at the Shopsin's General Store then this book is a wonderful and delicious trip back to that place (without the stress of maybe being kicked out). I haven't been to any of the newer locations but I miss Kenny's amazing cooking. This book is written exactly like he talks. You can hear his voice (probably yelling) when you read it. Now that I don't live in NYC anymore, I'm thrilled to be able to have a few of his amazing recipes with me. If you've ever been to Shopsin's then this is a MUST HAVE book. It's a great cookbook and a fun read. I only wished he shared his recipes for bread pudding and the butter broiled breads...I still dream about them.
Deliciously Entertaining February 20, 2010 Angela Bowden (Nashville, TN, USA) Kenny Shopsin may be in the top five of my list of personal heroes. Sure, he is harsh and in your face, but he is true to himself, and does things how he feels they need to be done. I love his outlook on life. I discovered him while browsing Netflix and finding the documentary "I Like Killing Flies", and this book is just as entertaining, if not more so. Buy it. Read it. You won't be sorry!
Kenny Shopsin, My Idol October 15, 2009 Q. Olson (Northern MN, USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not sure which is better, the food or the philosophy. I first became fascinated with Kenny Shopsin while watching a documentary about him (I Like Killing Flies - 2004). Then I learned about this book and it captures his wit and wisdom perfectly. I wish I had the confidence to tell it like it is, like he does. I think life would be less complicated that way.
I haven't made any of his recipes yet, but they look straight forward and uncomplicated -- which, he explains, is exactly how he cooks. Can't wait to try the mac n cheese pancakes!
Next time I'm in NYC, visiting his stall in the Essex Street Market will be first on the list. Hopefully, he won't toss me out.
A Humorous Grouch September 25, 2009 GH 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is mostly about Kenny Shopsin's grouchy/funny personality and his eccentric way of running his restaurant (e.g. 900 menu items, some of which he doesn't remember but if you order it he'll invent it; you can't order what someone else had, because he doesn't like to cook anything twice in a row; no groups larger than four, and he'll know it if you try to pretend that you were two groups of three and two; any violation of the rules, or if you're simply a jerk, you can get the #@&% out and never come back). The book is great fun to read, and he provides many recipes for cooking excellent dishes in a few minutes.
