Product Description The brand-new fourth edition of this widely praised reference guide has been updated with new information for everyone, including lovers of ethnic foods and health food aficionados. The authors have added many all-new entries on exotic produce and other unusual ingredients. An earlier edition of The New Food Lover's Companion was hailed by Bon App©tit magazine as "one of the best reference books we've seen, a must for every cook's library." This new edition has even more to offer! Among the myriad foods and culinary subjects defined and explained are cooking tools and techniques, meat cuts, breads, pastas, international foods, cheeses, eggs and omelets, herbs and spices, fruits and vegetables, candies and desserts, wines and cocktails, and literally everything else related to good food and enjoyable dining. Handy and helpful appendices cover a wide range of food-related topics. They include suggestions for substituting recipe ingredients, high-altitude baking adjustments, a microwave oven conversion chart, recommended safe cooking temperatures for various meats and fish, a guide to reading food package labels, seasoning suggestions to enhance favorite dishes, a food additives directory, and much more. The New Food Lover's Companion is a reference guide--not a cookbook--but it includes hundreds of cooking tips plus an extensive bibliography of recommended cookbooks and other food-related literature. Here in one volume is an invaluable companion for cooks--and for everybody else who loves good food. More than 6,700 entries plus line art that shows retail cuts of lamb, pork, beef, and veal.

Food Lovers WILL Love this Book! August 8, 2010 KDMask (Rochester, Planet Fab, NY) I bought this book for my husband who is a cooking enthusiast and cook book reader. He loves this reference book. (I do too!) It is full of fun and useful information. Any term you need, just look it up. From absinthe to zwieback, you'll find out more about food terms than you thought possible. Makes a wonderful gift for any "foodie" in your life. Small and easily stored with a wipe off cover.
Wonderful reference tool for the kitchen! July 27, 2010 S. Broussard (Louisiana) During lunch at a friend's home, the topic of discussion was about recipes and cooking terms. This friend had used the older version of The Food Lover's Companion to understand the recipe she was preparing. She passed the book around for us to see and several of us knew that we had to have one. It has been a terrific help when planning meals and experimenting with new things. It makes a great gift too!
Kindle Version Searches Don't Work As Expected July 17, 2010 Teri (Orem, UT) I have the printed version and I love it. I am relocating to England and wanted a Kindle version to take with me. However, I have found, (in the sample version at least), that the search feature does not work with the individual entries. It seems to find the "definition" text, but not the entries for which the books is entirely written for. Has anyone found that the full book performs otherwise?
